The most severe problems of the Baltic Sea are eutrophication, hazardous substances , the risks of the maritime traffic and the loss of biodiversity connected to the other three problems. BSAG works to find solutions to all these problem areas and to restore the good ecological balance of the Baltic Sea.

 

The causes of eutrophication, the most severe problem, are connected to the nutrient cycles. To put it simple, phosphorus and nitrogen, the nutrients crucial for living organisms, leak to the sea to feed the algae in the Baltic Sea instead of being available for plant growth for food production in the fields.

 

BSAG uses nutrient cycling as a viewpoint to look into the problems of the Baltic Sea. The nutrient recycling -theme includes a wide range of activity to work on, to gain favorable impacts on

 

• minimizing the nutrient runoffs from agriculture in the Baltic Sea Region

• minimizing the nutrient runoffs and the hazardous substances from urban and industrial waste water

• increasing the use of manure and other nutrient-containing organic fractions as fertilizer and an energy source

• decreasing the usage of fossil phosphorus
